A Journey Through Sunken Gardens St. Petersburg

In our latest video tour, we explore the lush landscapes and rich history of Sunken Gardens St. Petersburg. Led by Horticulture Supervisor Sean Farrell, this guided walk takes us through some of the garden’s most iconic spots, including the Fountain Plaza, the Oak Pavilion, and the Black Bridge. This is my first tour I did outside of Oregon, so I hope that you enjoy it!

Sunken Gardens began in 1903 when George Turner Sr., a plumber and avid gardener, purchased six acres of land, including a shallow lake. He drained the lake to create a fertile garden bed, planting papayas, citrus trees, and exotic plants. By the 1920s, the garden had become a popular roadside attraction, drawing visitors eager to experience its unique beauty.

Over the years, Sunken Gardens evolved, adding new plant species and features while maintaining its charm. In 1999, the City of St. Petersburg purchased the property, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Our tour showcases the diverse plant life that thrives in Sunken Gardens. From towering palms and vibrant bougainvillea to native ferns and exotic specimens, the garden is a living tapestry of color and texture. Sean Farrell’s expertise and enthusiasm bring each plant to life, offering insights into their care and significance.

Sunken Gardens’ enduring appeal is a testament to the community’s dedication to preserving this natural treasure. The garden’s transformation from a private endeavor to a public sanctuary reflects the collective effort to maintain its beauty and accessibility.

Today, Sunken Gardens continues to enchant visitors with its tranquil ambiance and educational programs. Whether you’re a seasoned horticulturist or simply seeking a peaceful retreat, the garden offers an enriching experience.
